We Made Fast Company!

I have some exciting news to share with the South Side Tours family.

Fast Company recently featured me as one of 21 Black women who were pushed out of the workplace and found a way to pivot, build and thrive. I’m #12. 😊

The feature is especially meaningful because it tells a little of the story behind how South Side Tours became what it is today.

After nearly a decade producing television and helping build a television production company, I learned that my contract wasn’t being renewed.

But South Side Tours wasn't born that day. I had already been working towards this idea—creating a tourism company that told the stories of Chicago’s South Side differently. I knew there was so much history, culture, architecture, food and greatness here that visitors and even lifelong Chicagoans needed to know about.

Suddenly, I had the time to stop thinking about what South Side Tours could be and throw myself into it full throttle. And what a ride it has been!

What started as an idea has grown into a company that has welcomed people from Chicago and around the world to experience the South Side through a different lens—and this year, our work was recognized with a Webby Award.

One of the things I shared with Fast Company was:

“Remember who you were before you had a boss.”

That lesson has stayed with me. Sometimes the things we're meant to build are already sitting inside of us—we just need the courage, opportunity or occasional push to give them our full attention.

I’m grateful to Fast Company and Brennan Nevada Johnson for including my story alongside 20 other Black women with incredible stories of reinvention.
